How to install software in windows 7 home premium 64 bit?

I recently bought a HP pavillion with Windows 7 home premium 64bit. Not able to install any software. Tried to install 64 bit executables but no success. Always returns “* is not a valid win32 application”. Tried changing compatibility to winxp sp2 and ran in admin mode. Still no success? Am i missing anything. Link to a 64 bit executable tat you are sure will install will be helpful.
