What would be the effect of installing the new Windows 7 Operating System on my computer in October?

I need a new laptop, but I know Microsoft is coming out a new version of Windows. HP is allowing customers to install it for free in October, but I was wondering how much of a pain this will be? It is likely I will to reinstall other programs such as ITunes again and will have to save all of my documents on disk, etc., right?
