What does GSM stand for in reference to the wireless internet?

I just bought an HP mini computer and signed on with the AT&T connect card. I can connect to the internet via Wi-Fi or using the connect card (cell phone signal). The computer calls the connect card (cell phone signal) “GSM” and I was just wondering what that stands for.
